A Simple Summer Upcycling Project for Little Hands

With the summer holidays here, many parents are balancing work, childcare and finding ways to keep little hands busy. We thought we’d share a simple project that combines creativity, sustainability and a little home inspiration.

Before those leftover Little Greene sample pots end up forgotten in the garage or shed, why not use them to give an old household item a new lease of life? It’s a great way to introduce children to colour, creativity and the value of upcycling.

We had a Little Greene sample pot in Ambleside left over from decorating our cloakroom, so we transformed an old wooden IKEA step that’s used daily in our kitchen. After masking the edges, my youngest took charge with a paintbrush, applying two coats to give it a fresh new look.

Next, we rescued an old wooden doorstop. We cleaned the base, removed the ceramic mouse, gave the wood a fresh coat of paint and glued the mouse back in place. A quick update that made something old feel new again.

There are so many other items that could be transformed too picture frames, plant pots, children’s stools, storage crates or even old coat hooks.

A well sized rug doesn’t shout for attention, it simply makes a room feel right.

In open plan spaces, a rug is one of the simplest ways to define a seating area, adding warmth, texture and comfort underfoot while helping to create a relaxed and inviting feel.

As a general rule, choose a rug that’s at least as wide as your sofa, allowing the front feet to sit comfortably on the rug and anchor the seating area. If you’re choosing between two sizes and the space allows, our advice is always to size up. A larger rug can help create an even greater sense of balance and connection between the furniture. Ideally, in these situations, the rug should extend beyond the sofa so the entire sofa, along with any side tables, coffee tables and occasional chairs, can sit comfortably on it, creating a well defined seating area within the room.
